Working with Recruiters Signing a non-compete or exclusive agreement I found an interesting post on RecruitingBlogs by Paul Gumbinner, a recruiter. I love to hear what recruiters think about the job search process and job seekers. Their perspective can really help us refine our message and usually self-made systems. Pauls post is titled A New One On Me, and talks about his experience with a shady competitor that was doing something that was likely unethical.  Apparently, it is abundant in the recruiter space. Its an interesting story read it here. What really got me, though, was the comment from Sandra McCartt Sandra comments a lot on these posts and always has really good, fair input.  Check out this snippet from her comment: I tell candidates that when any recruiter asks them to sign any kind of contract or any agreement other than a permission to check references they should limit it to that specific job if they are dumb enough to sign anything at all. and later. I agree he was foolish to sign it. So what do you sign, with a recruiter?  Id love to get Nick Corcodilos to weigh in on this one but here is my take-away for today: Dont Sign Anything!! Twentysomething How Ive been finding my best mentors By Ryan Healy Successful entrepreneurship usually includes a group of trusted mentors, according to Ben Casnocha, author of My Start up Life. But now that Ive spent a few months in corporate life, its clear to me that having a group of mentors is important whether you work for yourself or for someone else. However, the majority of people I know are not great at seeking out and developing these relationships. What I have learned in the past few months is that its easier than you think! Here are three things I have done that have helped me develop very rewarding relationships with mentors. 1. Find the right network For twentysomethings, the easiest place to look is in your parents network. Take advantage of it because theyve been developing these connections for years. Ask your parents if any of their friends or colleagues work in a field you are interested in. If you are not lucky enough to have well connected parents, all is not lost. Networking groups are everywhere these days. MeetUp.com gives you a way to find people with similar interests. Or you can start a niche blog and comment on blog posts from field-related experts. Leave a few insightful comments and your foot is in the door to contacting them. 2. Reach out Once you have made the first connection, the next step is simple. Reach out with a short email. Ask for a few pieces of advice. Assuming your contact replies, continue the conversation for a few days. Finally, ask if she is interested in meeting up for a quick lunch. Despite the ease of connecting online, face to face interaction can make a big difference in how quickly you make your mentor feel connected with you. At the very least, try to have a relatively long phone conversation to get to know each other. 3. Think in terms of frequency After a face to face meeting and a few emails, you should be able to tell if your contact is a potential mentor or advisor. If she is, dont be afraid to bug her! This is always the hardest part for me, but its the only way you can develop a good relationship. Send an occasional email or call with a casual, not extremely important, but honest question once in a while. If she is truly annoyed by this, then its probably time to seek advice elsewhere. But for the most part, I have found people genuinely like to help, especially older folks. The more contact you have, the stronger the relationship will be and the more interest your advisor will take in your career. Finding a true mentor can take a long time, but almost everyone will offer advice and guidance if asked politely. Corporate cultures that encourage collaboration between young and old are absolutely necessary, but the responsibility of developing these relationships is in the hands of young workers. The 17 Most Misleading Job Titles Batman.   Digital Overlord. Scrum Master. No, theyre not Halloween costumes,  theyre someones next job. With the right training, job seekers can be a Chick Sexer, a Comb Capper, or even a Batman (bat ears not included).   Or, some might skew to the more bizarre: A Bunghole Borer, Scrum  Master, or a Back-end Specialist these jobs all exist.   But, dont take their titles literally. FitSmallBusiness.com, the digital business publication, decided to help set things straight for the job seeker.    FSB  scoured the website and broke down some of the most confusing, entertaining, and misleading job titles that are not what they appear.  THESE ARE THE TOP 17 MOST MISLEADING JOB TITLES: 1)        Expert Upsetter   $11.76 per hour for laborer position to $30.32 per hour for a process engineer role. No, this isn’t a job for those who like to create drama â€" this position is for someone who sets up and operates a closed-die forging metal machine. 2)        Bunghole Borer $30,814 to $49,738 per year.   It sounds pretty crude, but this position is for someone who sets up and operates a boring machine (to bore holes in wooden parts â€" what else?). 3)        Evangelist $44,957 to $83,528 per year.    Yeah, not a preacher.   This position is actually slapped on for a lot of titles from sales and marketing titles to human resource jobs.   A community evangelist, for example, is someone who advocates for a company brand. 4)     Smutter $18,040 to $32,000 per year.   Not a position for a role in a porn movie, this title is responsible for tending the grain machines that clean up things like dirt, smut and rust from grain after it’s been harvested.   Feel a little embarrassed now? 5)        Chick Sexer Up to $60,000 per year.  The only “sex” that factors into this job involves distinguishing the sex of the chicken and other hatchlings right after they’re hatched.   Believe it or not, it’s getting more and more difficult to find quality sexers since the best chicken sexers only boast a 95 percent accuracy rate. 6)        Key Hanger An average of  $27,689 per year.   Wouldn’t it be nice to take this job at face value? This title is reserved for those who hold the key to a retail establishment.   More succinctly, the key hanger is a store manager or assistant manager who holds one of three keys to a store.   Feel a little silly? 7)        Penetration Tester   Up to $112,141 per year.   Giggles aside, this job title involves testing a computer system, network or web application to identify any vulnerability from hackers.   This position is also referred to as “ethical hacker”. 8)        Combat Advisor   $15.11 per hour, to $100.00 per hour.   Not a military position, this job title refers to a video game designer who specializes in creating virtual combat sequences. 9)        Erection Engineer $32,877 to $74,927 per year.   This person oversees everything that goes into erecting major infrastructure and skyscrapers.   They handle budgetary concerns, time management, supply cycles and safety compliance. Talking About Nothing is Part of a Job Search Campaign I know Ive ranted about this before but Im continuously amused by all the articles popping up about how social media is destroying real relationships. In my opinion, nothing could be further from the truth.The biggest pet peeve is that social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are flooded with people talking about nothingas if before social media, people who spoke always had something profound to say. People will always talk about nothingits just part of the conversation. Remember Seinfeld? It was a show about nothing and it was a huge hit because it made people laugh about the fact that talking about nothing is a big part of the human experience.I reconnected with a former colleague who I had not seen or talked to in 17 years. We stay connected on Facebook and for the most part we talk about nothingsilly things and the day to day trials of life as parents, women, and professionals. But that doesnt lessen the quality of the relationship. I spent several years working side by side with this person and built my trust and respect for her at that time. I dont have to talk on the phone with her daily or meet her for coffee to solidify the relationship. When we can get together, we will. For now, I am thrilled to have her back in my life.I have other connections via social media who I have never met in person. I have developed respect and trust for them based on what they post on social media sites. I consider them friends, even though I have never had a deep conversation with them about anything. But social media has set the stage for having more meaningful conversations should we get the chance to in the future.Job search at its core is about building relationships and being part of the conversation. Think of relationships you have formed through professional associations. Yes, you talk about topics relevant to the profession, but you also share funny stories and commentary on life. And sometimes those interactions are more precious than the headier conversation s about your profession. The same is true of contacts you meet at networking events, job fairs, outplacement services, and the unemployment office. Talking about nothing is part of a job search campaign because it builds relationship. So stop worrying about everything you post and everything you say. Get out there and comment on life, work, familythe human experience. Doing so will make you memorableand make you real. And at the end of the day, thats what job search is all about.
