Magazines, periodicals, journals, e-zines, (call them what you will) are a really good way to find out information to make you stand out at application and interview. Employers really want you to understand the industry or sector they work in. Many journals are written by professional bodies, others are more trade magazines, and some like the Economist New Scientist are considered suitable for general consumption and sold everywhere. When picking a journal or magazine to read first consider what it is you want to find out about, they will not all have the same coverage. Browsing the paper copies can help. Information on new products or research Innovations best practice Customer sales trends Impact of policies or the economy Articles on key players in the industry Case studies Industry awards They may also contain Sources of vacancies Directories of member companies or service directores useful for making speculative applications Salary surveys Information on new training or recruitment initiatives .as a bonus they may also help you with your course work! Reading real world examples of how theories or jobs really work in practice and the issues companies face, can really help you understand the expectations of an employer.
